Rutgers University (/ ˈ r ʌ t ɡ ər z / RUT-gərz; RU), officially Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a public land-grant research university consisting of four campuses in New Jersey. Chartered in 1766, Rutgers was originally called Queen's College, and was affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church.
These institutions include four public research universities, seven state colleges and universities, fourteen private colleges and universities (two of which are classified as research universities), eighteen county colleges, fourteen religious institutions, and eight for-profit proprietary schools.
